Florida Hit and Run Semi Truck Accident Attorneys

Truck Hit-and-Run Accident

On average, nearly half a million large trucks (greater than five tons or more) are involved in collisions on United States roads each year. Of these accidents, nearly 5,000 on average wind up proving fatal to at least one person involved. While "normal" truck accidents can be tragic, costly, harrowing, and can precipitate epic legal battles over liability and compensation, hit-and-run truck accidents can prove doubly flustering.

According to the laws of Florida, if a truck driver causes a collision with another truck or vehicle (or pedestrians) and then leaves the scene without providing identifying information, the police can arrest the driver on charges of hit-and-run. If the accident led to serious injury or fatalities, the driver can be prosecuted for a felony.

What to do if a trucker hits your car and then flees the scene:

Don't pursue the hit and run truck driver in your broken vehicle. Your car may be damaged, or you may be more hurt than you realize. If possible, write down the trucker's license plate info; better yet, take a picture of the fleeing vehicle.

Write everything down. Get witness statements on paper. The more accurate your paper trail - and the quicker you collect information about the hit-and-run - the better the police's chances of catching the driver, and the easier it will be to prosecute your case and win damages. The human memory is notoriously plastic and changeable. Even though the events of the hit-and-run may remain vivid in your mind for weeks to months afterwards, the actual details of the crash can "change" in your mind. That's why it's so important to get the information "out of your head" ASAP following the crash.

Don't compound your problems by taking anger out on others. Seeing your car smashed or your friends and family members injured by a trucker who flees can truly boil the blood. As much as you want to lash back against "someone or anyone," keep your emotions in check. Take rational steps to get medical attention for you and your passengers (if you need such attention), and meticulously detail the events.

Tell the police. Some victims of hit-and-run accidents fear contacting the police. Maybe they may have outstanding tickets or they lack insurance. Perhaps they just "don't want to make a big deal" out of the accident. It's critical to get a police report filled out ASAP, not only to improve your chances of catching the driver who hit you but also to help you win in the court of law.
