Interstate 95 in Riviera Beach became a nightmare as two consecutive accidents, both of them involving semi-trucks, blocked all lanes of the highway and brought traffic to a standstill. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), three people were hospitalized in the two accidents.
The first crash involved five vehicles and one semi-truck. FHP reported the accident was most likely caused by a downpour that occurred at the time of the semi-truck crash in Florida. Two people in that accident were hospitalized, but their injuries were not considered to be life threatening.
Others who received slight injuries were treated at the scene.
The second crash involved a Toyota Camry driven by an 18-year-old man. It is believed that a semi-truck and the Toyota collided when both the vehicles were approaching the slowdown created by the first accident. The roof of the Camry was severely damaged, although it is still unclear whether the truck ran over the Toyota or if it was crushed along the median of the highway.
The Palm Bach Post reported that the young man suffered what was described as “extremely serious injuries” and was flown to St. Mary’s Medical Center via Trauma Hawk helicopter.
FHP is still investigating the accidents and no charges have been filed.
