A 36-year-old Tampa woman is dead and the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is still investigating why a tanker truck hit her as she stood near her car on the shoulder of I-75 in Manatee County.
According to FHP, for some unknown reason, the woman’s 2007 BMW had spun off the side of the highway at 3 a.m. and become stuck in a ditch. Apparently, the woman got out of the car and was standing near the edge of the southbound lanes of the interstate when a tanker truck driven by a 60-year-old Port Richey man struck her.
FHP says the Florida fatal tractor trailer accident remains under investigation.
Be Aware. Stay Alive.
Experts say that if you are stranded on the side of the road, there are certain actions you can take to keep yourself safe. Here are a few tips:
- Make sure your car is as far off the road as possible.
- Turn on your emergency flashers. It might sound like an obvious move, but having your vehicle’s emergency flashers on gets other motorists’ attention and gives them a chance to move over or slow down.
- Stay inside your vehicle until help arrives. Call for assistance (which means having a charged cell phone ready to go) and stay put if you can — especially when it is dark outside or the weather is bad.
